A man travels to a Welsh island in 1905 to ransom his sister from the cult that has taken her. The island is failing: crops are dying, fish are rotting, and the community's founders have an arrangement with something in the ground that is no longer producing.

For an hour it is The Wicker Man with more mud. Then Evans remembers what he is good at and the last forty minutes become sustained, ugly, physical violence, including a device the film introduces early and returns to.

Michael Sheen plays the prophet as a man who believes and is out of options, which is more interesting than a fraud would be.

It is at least twenty minutes too long and the last act is worth it.
