Wolfen
Not really a werewolf film. Something older is hunting in the ruins of the South Bronx.
A detective investigates a series of killings in a demolished New York neighbourhood and finds the predators are not men and not quite wolves.
Michael Wadleigh, who made Woodstock, directed only this one fiction feature. The film uses a solarised thermal point of view for the creatures, decades before it became standard, and the Bronx locations, genuinely derelict, are the real subject.
Its idea is ecological and political: the wolfen are an older intelligence that has always lived in the margins humans abandon, and they take the poor and the addicted because nobody counts them. A Native American ironworker delivers the film's thesis.
It was released the same year as the two great transformation films and was buried by them, unfairly. It is a slower, stranger, sadder thing than either.
Albert Finney is the detective.

Forest of Fear
Marijuana growers, a herbicide and some very slow zombies. On the list by accident of title.
The Werewolf and the Yeti
Paul Naschy in the Himalayas. On the list almost certainly because somebody read the title and stopped.
Long Weekend
A couple with a failing marriage treat a beach with contempt. Nothing supernatural happens.
Zombie Creeping Flesh
Bruno Mattei splicing stock documentary footage into a zombie film and hoping nobody notices.
When Animals Dream
A Danish coming-of-age werewolf film, and the transformation is puberty in a fishing village that already knows.
Phase IV
Saul Bass's only feature. The ants are shot like a nature documentary and it is deeply strange.
