Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

A Czech surrealist film about a thirteen-year-old girl, vampires and menstruation, and it is not what that sounds like.

Valerie's first period begins and the world reorganises around it: a missionary who is also a vampire who is also possibly her father, a grandmother who trades her body for youth, a boy who may be her brother.

Jaromil Jireš made it during the Czech New Wave, adapting a surrealist novel from 1935, and the film runs entirely on dream logic with no interest in whether events are consistent.

It is filmed in summer meadows, all white lace and daisies and sunlight, which is what makes the content land as unsettling rather than lurid.

The score, by Luboš Fišer, is one of the most beautiful in any horror film and is largely responsible for its reputation.

It has been enormously influential on folk horror since, particularly on anything involving girls, gardens and blood.
