The Invitation

A dinner party where you spend ninety minutes unsure whether the host is grieving or dangerous, and so does the protagonist.

Will returns to the Hollywood Hills house he used to live in, now occupied by his ex-wife and her new husband, for a reunion dinner with old friends. Their son died. She has joined something in Mexico that has helped her.

Karyn Kusama makes the whole film out of social discomfort. Will keeps noticing things: bars on a window, a locked door, a guest who has not arrived. Every one has a reasonable explanation and the other guests keep providing them.

The tension is that he may simply be a man who has never processed his son's death, and the film gives that reading real weight.

The last shot pulls back to reveal something that reframes everything, and it is the best final image of the decade.
