Phase IV
Saul Bass's only feature. The ants are shot like a nature documentary and it is deeply strange.
The only feature Saul Bass directed, and it looks like nothing else because he was a title designer.
Ants in the Arizona desert achieve a collective intelligence after a cosmic event. Two scientists in a sealed dome try to communicate with them.
Ken Middleham shot the insect sequences as genuine macro documentary, with real ants performing real behaviours, and Bass cuts them together as though the ants have a plot, which they do. There is no anthropomorphism and no animation.
The dome, the heat, the geometric towers the ants build, and the yellow light are pure design intelligence applied to a science fiction premise.
Paramount removed the original ending, a four-minute abstract sequence, and it was believed lost until a print turned up in 2012. Find a version that has it.

Adjacent
Night of the Demon
Bigfoot tears a man's genitals off. That is the scene, that is the film, that is why it was prosecuted.
Forest of Fear
Marijuana growers, a herbicide and some very slow zombies. On the list by accident of title.
The Werewolf and the Yeti
Paul Naschy in the Himalayas. On the list almost certainly because somebody read the title and stopped.
Long Weekend
A couple with a failing marriage treat a beach with contempt. Nothing supernatural happens.
Night of the Bloody Apes
A luchadora, a heart transplant from a gorilla, and real open-heart surgery footage spliced in.
Q: The Winged Serpent
An Aztec god nests atop the Chrysler Building and eats sunbathers, and Michael Moriarty is extraordinary.
