The last great Universal monster, and a suit design nobody has improved on in seventy years.
The last of the Universal monsters and a suit design nobody has improved on in seventy years.
An expedition on the Amazon finds a living link between fish and man. He watches the woman swim, and the film's most famous sequence is a long underwater ballet in which she does laps on the surface and he mirrors her from below without touching.
The suit was designed by Milicent Patrick, who was written out of the publicity by the studio's makeup head and whose contribution was not properly credited for fifty years.
Two performers played the Gill-man: Ben Chapman on land and Ricou Browning, a competitive swimmer, underwater. Browning held his breath for up to four minutes at a time because the suit had no air supply.
Shot in 3D. The underwater photography in Florida is better than the plot deserves.

Adjacent
Night of the Demon
Bigfoot tears a man's genitals off. That is the scene, that is the film, that is why it was prosecuted.
The Werewolf and the Yeti
Paul Naschy in the Himalayas. On the list almost certainly because somebody read the title and stopped.
Night of the Bloody Apes
A luchadora, a heart transplant from a gorilla, and real open-heart surgery footage spliced in.
Q: The Winged Serpent
An Aztec god nests atop the Chrysler Building and eats sunbathers, and Michael Moriarty is extraordinary.
Contamination
An Alien knock-off with exploding chests and a Goblin score doing heavy lifting throughout.
Matango
Toho's mushroom people, made by the Godzilla team, and it is far bleaker than its reputation.
