Folk horror run entirely in daylight, which is the formal gag and also the reason it gets under people.

Dani's family dies in the first ten minutes in a sequence Aster shoots with no music and no cutting away, and the rest of the film is about a boyfriend who should have ended the relationship a year ago and now cannot.

The Hårga are hospitable throughout. Nobody is menacing, nothing is hidden, every ritual is explained in advance and written in a book the guests are shown. The horror is that Dani is the only person being offered anything, and that the offer is real.

Aster has called it a breakup film and it is more accurate than it sounds. The last shot is a woman getting what she needs, and whether that reads as triumph or as the worst thing in the film is the whole argument about it.

The theatrical cut is 148 minutes. The director's cut is 171 and is better paced, which is not a sentence you write often.
